make sure she is totally ready before u start searching, n make sure she is aware of 'all' the conciquences. if she was only 6 weeks old then she has to ask herself questions n prepare herself for every outcome, why would a father leave his child at such a young age? why did he abandon her? wat if he still doesnt want to know who she is?
if u r the one that is searching for him on her behalf, if/when u find him confront him before u tell ur mother, sometimes its easier not to know then to be hurt, to make sure, see if he wants contact, see if he wants to be found. he just might not, n im sure that it would hurt ur mother to go through everything she has to n then find out that it wasnt worth it!! i dont mean to seem nasty but u really need to make sure that ur mother is 100% positive she wants to go through with it, deep thought needs to be put in the issue especially after such a long time. i hope all goes well, gud luck n take care xx

It took me a long time but I did it. You could start by putting his name in a search engine when you do this put an asterisk directly after the last letter of his name.
You can also try:
http://www.b4usearch.com/
http://www.onlinesearches.info/?gclid=CKv4yKyT3IoCFQbolAodWXpSyw
The b4usearch site is very good and will list quite a lot of names etc.
The online searches site will do the electoral roll searches for quite a few years, at a very small cost. When I say small I mean small, and you can just buy as little as 1 hours time.
You can post Messages on some of the larger sites for free, all you have to do is just register.

If he has a fairly unusual name, he could be found on ancestry.com, but you have to be a subscriber. I could look him up if I had his name and maybe the state where he would most likely be located. His approximate age could help, too. If it's a common name and you don't know where he might be, it would be pretty difficult to find him on that site.
