To be a cop these days, you have to deal with being a taxman and money baron collector first.
I'm sure there are plenty of good men and women, who would love to pay more attention to crime prevention. then spend masses of amounts of time. trying to fill quotas. and we all know they do have to fill quotas.
they fill quotas while there are real criminals out there. ducking a system. and some do know just how to duck it.
And what gives them a bad name is, one day you get popped with some obscure amount of money owed to the police and justice system, for not wearing your seatbelt. when in reality the only person who would suffer is you. for not wearing your seatbelt.
the average person hates being controlled and micro managed by an over zealous control freak police force.
and the only people that get away with it are the rich. sure there are rich people. but and a big but here. Isn't this the land of WE THE PEOPLE?
yes there will always be rich people and poor people. but I thought we all deserve to be treated the same? in america atleast?
put your money where your mouth is america. show and prove. otherwise... well you know where you shove it.
good luck and God Bless

Ok Vince, short and sweet. The general population of the country does not distrust cops. Mostly its the ones who are doing wrong and have gotten caught. Its human nature to not like someone who does have the authority given to them by your government to sieze your person or property when they have probable caue to do so. As in any profession there are those that wear the uniform that do not deserve to and have no business in it. Just like there are doctors, lawyers, teachers, pastors & priests who do not deserve thier chosen profession and have no business in it. Being that police are public figures so to speak everything they do is scrutinized and arm charied quarterbacked by the public. Thats the way society is.
For those that speak of american law enforcement negatively do me favor..Check into how police are in other countries around the world before you come down on our system of enforcement. I think you will find that we are meak and light handed compared to most. I think you could campare United States police to a baby sitter and Police around the world to super nanny...Most officers are here to serve and protect and the vast majority of them do it and do it well....Give me one other profession where the people second guess what you do, call you names, disrespect you and some people would as just soon see you dead as look at you yet most officers would die to protect those peoples rights to do those things.

Because some of the bad eggs are seen ignoring, or breaking the very laws which they have been entrusted to enforce. Some have been rapist, pedofiles, murderers, kidnappers, etc. This does not bode well in gaining public trust. Besides this, some police officers are "badge heavy". They let their authority go to their heads and harrass people needlessly.

They have too much authority and over use their powers. They can search anybody at anytime with or without just cause. They say that's not true, but I've seen it firsthand. I've called them pigs most of my life. I do agree that a lot of cops are trying to do good, but a large number are, as you say, scum. They are also too trigger happy.

Maybe you get this impression because of the people with whom you choose to talk. Poll after poll has shown that the majority of the public trusts the police.

the most people that i think refer to cops as scum and merciless are those that continue to practice in law breaking. i dont hold all cops accountable for the things that the dirty ones did or do. there are some really good cops out there.

Generally the young and elderly trust the police, while teenagers through the thirties have an unwarranted fear of the police.
It seems to be human nature, rebellion against authority.

We live in a society that doesn't take responsibility for their own actions. Take for example the Rodney King incident. Anyone who truly knows anything about the incident knows that he needed a good beating...and probably more than once.

You cannot get conclusive evidence from here. The sampling of people that actually answered your question may not have been a overall sampling of the community. So the answers may have been biased.

It's all in your head. The cops don't bother people who obey the law.
