We have been feeding our dogs Pedigree for at least 4 years now. We never had a problem with it and our dogs. Recently, I would say in the past 2 months, my husky and malamute have had very loose stools. We took them to the vet and the vet said they weren't sick and that it must be the food. She said to stay away from anything with corn in it.
We went looking for a better food, but everything without corn in it was sooo expensive. Thirty-five to Forty-five dollars for a 20 pound bag of Royal Canin was a bit pricey for us. This was locally. So we kept them on Pedigree and there stools would go back and forth.
We decided to take the hour trip to the closest Petco. After spending an hour there, we decided on Nutro Natural Choice. Again, all the other foods that didn't have corn in it were very expensive and beyond our budget. This was $36 for a 40 pound bag and we could handle that.
So I am curious if we made a good choice?
We have 4 dogs to feed, 2 of them being large.

We looked at Nutro max and it had some sort of corn in it. I am trying to stay away from corn fillers with my dogs.

Shepardgirl, I'm not sure where you shop, but Canidae is not that cheap here. It's much more expensive then that. All the others are just as expensive.
I would love to get the food at Costco that is made by diamond, but the nearest Costco is something like 3 hours away from here.

Shepardgirl, hehe... that's okay. It didn't look like it had many fillers in it and no corn which was at the top of our list for making sure the food had none of.

Yes you made a good choice, Nutro is alot better than pedigree and it is a good mid range food. In case they didnt tell you at the pet store Nutro has a frequent buyer program.. you can sign up at their website and they will send you $20 worth of coupons for foods and/or treats as well as a card that you bring to the store and get stamped when you buy a bag of food.. if you buy 10 bags before 14 months have passed you get a free bag, however make sure to only put the biggest bags you buy on the card because if you have a smaller bag on there that is the size you will get free. Check it out here at the Nutro site... http://www.nutroproducts.com/fbpnutroReg.asp
The coupons are really good a couple bucks off food, treats, canned food... whatever you fill out in the form you will get coupons for.

What you could do is start giving your dogs RAW meaty bones that would take care of the loose stools an it is good for your dogs. It also keeps their teeth clean. Also Nutro is not that good of a dog food, you should look into Wellness, Canidae, Solid Gold , Innova and even Chicken soup for dogs, Diamond lamb and rice is okay too. The last two are reasonably priced. Canidae is a really good food and it is an all stage food, it cost around $37 for a 40 pound bag.
Sorry I missed that it was natural choice that one is okay.
I live in a big city and yesterday I actually just bought (5) 40 pound bags of canidae for $166. I guess it is more expensive in smaller cities. It is too bad that Costco is so far from you because Diamond is not a bad food and really reasonably priced, but since you can not Natural choice is a pretty good food, but you should seriously consider giving raw meaty bones. For one thing you could cut down on how much dog food you feed and there are alot of health benefits for the dog in feeding raw.

You've made a good choice. If your budget is the question, I think you have done better than picking a cheap grocery store brand.
You can always supplement as well. Go by the butcher once a week, pick up some raw marrow bones, beef hooves or turkey necks. They make a great treat. Just no cooked bones.
Once in awhile mix yoghurt (plain) and chopped boiled egg, all into a 'mash' and serve it to your dogs. This creates a 'flora' in the stomach, and is a good supplement.
Yes, about the corn....an allergen for most breeds, and a cheap filler.

I have 2 large dogs(meaning 60-120 pounds and one is still a pup) that go through about 40 pounds of food in under 2 weeks. We too fed them pedigree and they soon became gassy on it so we switched foods. If you buy a food with no fillers they have less waste and it doesnt contain corn but they ARE expensive.Castor & Pollux, sensible choice {40 pounds 36 dollars},Nutro Max are also good choices. however if you have a tractor supply, farm and fleet near by they too often carry dog food without the petstore price tag.

I feed blue seal life stages lamb and rice, just as good as nutro but costs 27.00 for 40 lbs. Walmart has natrual balance lamb and rice for about 16.00 for 25 lbs thats really good to. I wouldnt feed petigree to a dog it I had to. Corn isnt bad for dogs unles ies the basis of the food. the blue seal has corn glutin not corn meal and the blue seal pork and barley has no corn at all. Stay away from the designer foods theyre unproven and pricey. Have you looked at evolve its 28.00 for 25 lbs

Hi! I have been feeding all my dogs NUTRO large breed foods forever. NUTRO makes a very good food and is very well balanced.
I usually get it form my farm supplier but I do know that most Agway's sell it too.
NUTRO also has a wonderful web site. so you can go to it and see if there is anything else to check for.
All my Goldens are very healthy and happy with the NUTRO.

That is the kibble my vet was feeding my pup,
and the food he is still eating. It is one of many
healthy choices to give your dogs.
The best way to save money when buying quality kibble
is to buy it in bulk. I use those supersized "ziploc" bags.
Also Nutro has a program you can enroll in that lets you
get one free bag of food after you purchase like 10.
Just be sure to go to the same place as it is the store
that mails in your coupon for you.
