Most people in the U.S. who go to church only go for the political advantage they receive from going. It is a very social thing to do and the church provides many social activities for youth.
While a great number of people seem to thrive on the B.S. I really don't think most people really understand it or have really read the bible. I think the most sincere believers are the ones newly converted and have been converted for five years or less. It takes about five years to see the irrationality of it and for the things in the church to seem ludicris.
Usually first year converts are the most dogmatic and truly sincere.
I was there once...I was very sincere and very dogmatic at one time. As I searched myself, I realized I was deep down very afraid to not believe and I also realized I was afraid of my own mortality and power. It has only been lately that I can finally say my mind with no fear...I feel so free to not be connected to any religion.
I was raised Southern Baptist, Went to a Pentecostal Bible College for four years, Married a preacher and had him leave me (like so many do) and had lots and lots of time to think and regroup.
I've sat in churches of all kinds both as a believer, a partial believer and then as a totally non believer afraid to speak up and finally as a totally non believer who is NOT afraid to speak up when asked.
I've observed all kinds of people, socialized with church people from all denominations and I come to the conclusion, most people don't really believe it but just say they do to fit in. Most people are afraid to be without their social and political network.
Religion is highly organized and attracts all kinds of people because people need organization and rules to give order to their lives...they don't necessarily BELIEVE the Bible God nor do they really KNOW the Bible God but they are church members for the structure of it.
Although I haven't visited and participated in very many Moslem and Hindu ceremonies and services, I draw pretty much the same conclusion of all of them. They don't really understand what they believe but need structure and claim to believe whole heartedly so as not to be ousted from their support group.

It's hard to understand how anyone who has done any research doesn't believe in God. I'm not talking about looking into only those sources that agree with you but doing thoughtful and detailed research into the Bible. You'll be surprised to find archeology evidence is constantly coming to light to support it. The people in the Bible are recorded in other sources and the histories match. It's a great deal harder to disbelieve when you actually do the research than it is when you rely on what others say to establish your beliefs (or lack of beliefs).

Yes, at least some of us believe in the God of the Bible. We have learned that he is real. I don't mean that we have been "taught" that he is real but we have learned because of our personal relationship with him. Yes, some people do get very emotionally involved in the "process of belief" and do not actually find the personal relationship I speak of. But, speaking only for myself, I know how much my life has changed since coming to that relationship. If I could give it to you for only a moment, you would understand. Unfortunately, it is something that only you can choose. I admit that at times I have wondered about the why and how of things but I have never wondered if God was there. I am not a "church" person as you put it so I do not have specific teachings that cloud my thoughts. I am open to whatever God brings into my heart.

If there is no God, then someone has a lot of explaining to do!
First there is the question of how the world came about and then there is the question of where the human race started from. Some believe we came from the apes, now where did the apes come from? The world and everything in it was created by God. He always was and always will be!

Mr. Nearly,
Is Tony Dungy considered a rational person? Was Martin Luther King considered rational. Either your definition is incorrect or I don't understand it!!!!!
A true believer would not dismiss their belief, rather they would die for it. Do you know of many people that would trully die for their believes? How can one not be adamant about their beliefs? If one is not adamant, they don't trully believe, about anything. You can't say I don't love my child, you can't tell me I don't know what 2 and 2 is. There are a multitude of things you can't tell me. Why? Because I believe them to be true,, because you'll never change my mind. Possibly you have never met a truth that is so true to you, that nothing or no one could ever change your mind. It's not about religion babe, it's about KNOWING! I KNOW I LOVE MY CHILD, as I know I LOVE GOD. Are you lacking in a personal level? There is something missing in my opinion in people that can't accept others for what they believe. I don't care what muslims believe. I don't care if people follow their hearts and it takes them to a 'gay' relationship. I don't care if you dislike all 'church' people. But, I do care how you behave. I dont' want people murdering others. I do expect people to say thank you and please. I do expect all to be civilized to each other. I don't want people to rape, murder, steal and spit! But, I respect others beiefs, as I expect them to let me have mine. I won't force mine, but if you ask, I'll tell you. And, I'll back it up with what I believe helps: THE BIBLE

If "church people" have a faith in the "Bible God" and it makes their lives better and more meaningful what is the harm? Why do some non-believers have a problem with it?
I'm a long-time Atheist and it doesn't bother me at all.

Only the person themselves knows if he believes.
Other people do not know what is in a persons mind.
That is why psychiatry is a bunch of crap.
You can't know what is in a persons mind.
Belief is irrational. I think that, that is its' nature.
Rationality will not bring you spiritual belief.
Faith is spiritual.
It is like the ability to see something that others can't see.

I live my life for and to God 7/24/365. It is not fake. God is very real and very evident in my life and in the lives of millions of others. That is your choice not to believe or to follow God. But please have respect for those of us who do believe in, know, and follow God Almighty, just as I have respect for you and your choices.
