I live in a house with a 9-year old brother and my mom. I am becoming 14 years old in the next month. I have been to a few animal shelters, but all the dogs I wanted were not adoptable because they were too not nice or big for my brother. Is that true? My brother is abou5 5 foot 5. I don't understand. I want to get a husky, a beagle, or a a shepherd mix. A retriever would be fine. What type of breed do you think I will need?

Any of those breeds can be good for a family. one thing I would recommend is to go to akc.org or to nextdaypets.com and you can look @ the different characteristics of each breed, and choose one that is right for you and your family.

Shelters have three type of dogs Adoptable, 3C, Strays, ( this is all on where you look. What shelters you go to some don't have this test: Does the animal get along with other animal? Does the animal get along with younger kids? Does the animal have any problem with listening? Has this animal to your knowledge even bit anyone? Some place go on if they can go in the cage with the animal it's OK for adoption. It's something you might want to ask someone who works there, when looking for an animal) Adoptable dogs are the ones that have are friendly with people and some other pets. 3C are dogs or cats that have biten in the past or that are being Held for something the own did or did not do most dogs that are 3C are not adoptable. Stray are dogs that have owners but don't know there gone or have left them for unknown reasons. Thank you for going to the shelters for a pet.

Huskies and Shepherds are great family dogs, but REQUIRE a lot of exercise. Without it, they will find interesting ways to get it themselves (through unwanted digging, escaping, chewing, etc). They also are both shedders - a lot. Beagles are also great family dogs, but have a tendency to roam. Retreivers are also great family dogs, but also need exercise and grooming. The best advice I can give is to go to the shelter, and narrow your search to 4 or 5 dogs. See if the shelter will allow you to spend time with each (15-20 minutes each) playing and interacting. This may take a few trips. But, you may be able to see which dog is most compatible with your family. Thank you for looking at shelter animals first, by the way.

Huskies are Hyper, Labs while friendly Hyper as well... GSDs are good, for a family dog a retriever or a Mutt, a good Mutt as a Puppy from a shelter makes a GREAT Pet, you cant base it strictly on breed go and get a feel shelters have puppies, and older dogs you have to understand the dogs personalities are differnt in a shelter because they are locked up

I have a yellow lab and i think that they are the friendliest dog ever. I think that you should go with a beagle, Labrador retriever, or a golden retriever. They seem to be the best family dogs. I think that huskies are a more protective kind of dog. Labs are about medium height and beagles are usually smaller. Just watch out if you get a beagle they tend to bark a lot. Golden retrievers are just like labs but tend to shed their hair more.

I am 14 years old now and 5 foot 3 inches, I have no problem with big dogs so I don't think he should have a problem with a shepherd mix. They are really great dogs too so I think they would be a great choice. Don't worry about a dog that is too big.

A Yorkie is a great dog but I wouldn't consider it a dog for young boys. A beagle is such a wonderful dog but no they are not quiet at all! They love to run and bark..they are hunting dogs. German Shepherd or GS mixes are fantastic dogs and very protective but need quite a bit of training ( I have one... i know) I think the best dog for you and your brother would be a good mutt mix...Something with lab mix. Very loyal, trainable, and just a good all around dog for young boys.

I'd say go get a young mutt from the pound. Eventually, they will get put to sleep. Honestly, mutt's are the nicest pets that you'll ever have. It doesnt matter what breed, and your brothers taller than me (5.2) and I've been around rottwielers since I was 7. So, it shouldnt matter what dog you get. But with all dogs, you have to watch what you do around it. I mean, it is an animal, and they react differently than human's do.

Basically, any dog would be good. Treat it nice, give it attention, food, water and a good home. And love it. And it'll be a great companion :)

Well, who says the dogs are too big for your brother? Your parents or the people that work at the shelter? Maybe your brother's afraid of big dogs and your parents don't want to get one. If the shelter people are saying that....I don't know what they're talking about. How much land do you have? You're looking at very active dogs that like to run alot.

Where you live matters a lot. A big dog in a small house is a problem. A small dog on a large farm might get lost. Your mom might accept a smaller dog that can be looked after easier. But of course it should be big enough to play fetch with.

Shepards are really nice family dogs but I perfer labrador retrevers. They are good with any age child expecially females. They are just about everthing a kid wants in a dog and mom doesnt have to worry about long hair. My grand kids are 3. 5 and 7 and they play with my 5 labs all day long.
