well, you stated elegance, style, and great performance. that leads only to the bmw x5 for 2007.

This beautiful sav is elegant, very stylish, and handles better than any other suv, except maybe the porsche. Yet is still available as a 7 passenger. You'll love it.

When buying an SUV, avoid unibody construction if you want a tough vehicle. If you basically want a tall car with all wheel drive, then a unibody will be OK.

Small SUV: Dodge Nitro. The Nitro is all new, is built with Body on frame construction so it is much tougher than any unibody POS like the Honda SUV's. The next generation Jeep liberty will be built on the same platform.

Midsize SUV: Ford Explorer or Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep Cherokee is one of the most customer loyal SUV's out there. My mom drives an Explorer, and it is an excellent vehicle. You really can't go wrong with either of them.

Large SUV: The Dodge Durango is nice, but isn't quite as big as the Expedition or Tahoe. The Expedition beat the Tahoe head to head in Motor Trend, or was it Car and Driver, i don't remember. But they were so close that it really should have been a tie. The Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Aramda are a notch below the Ford and GM models.

If you like Crossovers, the Mazda CX-7, Mazda CX-9, Ford Edge and GMC Acadia are all good, but they are all unibody vehicles and won't hold up as well to work as the Truck based SUV's I listed above.

Oh, i just read that you have four kids. You need a large SUV.

Considering your scenario, I've taken out any small SUVs.

Midsize: If you want elegance, try the Mercedes ML, Acura MDX or BMW X5. On a downside, the ML and X5 are quite expensive compared to similarly equipped Japanese SUVs (like the new MDX). The X5 and MDX both offer third-row seats while the ML does not. In the MDX they are standard and in the X5 they are $1700 and $1200 for the 3.0si and 4.8i models respectively.Out of these three, the MDX is the best in my opinion. It comes standard with Acura's Super Handling All Wheel Drive. In addition, it has more standard features than both the ML and the X5.

Which SUV size are you considering?

For small size SUV, Honda CR-V hands down - these small suv's are fuel efficient, spacious for its size, and, in keeping with Honda's rep for quality, a good buy for the long haul.

For mid size SUV, Ford Explorer - tried and true.

For full size - I'm not impressed with any of these.

For buying an SUV, consider your needs of size - unless you plan on hauling a full troop of kids, the mid size will fulfill your needs without breaking the bank on fuel.

Also, consider your needs on drivelines. Many will disagree (especially car salespeople), but most people do not need four wheel drive. Most people need 4 wheel drive 5 days out of the year (especially on the snowy days in Michigan). The extra expense on 4 wheel drive isn't worth it to me, when you use it 4 days a year, and when the repair bills cost twice as much with a four wheel drive vehicle.

If you will use it off roading or driving through the woods and forests, then you'll definitely use 4 wheel drive. However, you may not need it to drive to Starbucks, Kroger, then back home to the burbs.
