It all depends on your income and what type of lifestyle you seek. The most populated and the most lively is Oahu. Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, and the BigIsland are much more laid back. Oahu also has a high crime rate.

Do A LOT of research before you move to Hawaii because although it is an amazing beautiful place,it is much more expensive than anywhere on the mainland.Things like property, groceries, taxes etc are a lot higher.
Many people move here thinking that it's a perfect place because it's so beautiful but life can be hard too.A lot of people here have two jobs or more just to make ends meet.
Visit before you make your final decision. All the islands are totally different and which island you choose to live on depends on your personality and your priorities.
I have a book called "So You Want To Live In Hawaii",maybe it can be bought online too,it's really good.It gives an honest view on all the islands and what to expect when you move here.
Good Luck with it if you decide to go ahead with it! :)

Cheapest living is on the Big Island (of Hawaii) but that is still way costly compared to the mainland.

Oh, sounds expensive!!! LOL! =D
Well, I guess I would just start in Honolulu. Maybe rent a cheap apartment and start from there. Do some house-hunting out of the apartment until you find the perfect place. And snatch it up!
Good luck!
