Alcohol is legal, which is why it isnt considered an illegal drug. However the effects of alcohol can be more devestating than compared to an actual illegal drug. Alcohol effects every single one of your senses, because it basically numbs the brain, which is why when you are drunk, you cant really do anything. Give it time, I see another alcohol ban like they did way back in the early 1900's, because there are too many people that say stupid things like "alcohol is my drug of choice".
Its people who think its cool to be that way that have made it so that now a days a person can spend more jail time for a DWI as opposed to sexual assault.

It is definitely a drug and causes more problems than most other drugs put together. I was brought up by somebody addicted to alcohol and am still suffering psychologically 25 after their death (from alcohol). Out of four of us siblings, two are alcoholics and we've all had our lives badly messed up by the way we were brought up and by what we went through during our childhood. Although I don't drink and have managed over the years to sort my life out, my life would have been a lot easier if I had not had all those problems to sort through in my twenties. Luckily I have been able to bring up my own children very differently and they are stable, well-rounded individuals. However, one of my sisters (who has drink problems) has been unable to do this, and her children are both suffering the consequences.

Im sure i have heard that if alcohol was invented now and brought out on to the market, it would be classed as a Class A drug, but as someone has mentioned, it is just more socially acceptable as it has been around for so long. (This is a really distant memory that i seem to remember!-not 100% sure!)

Yes & it's one that needs care, but it's legal. They do say that if it hadn't been discovered before modern drugs legislation, that it would have been an illegal drug, as it was once in the USA.
