I have had panic/anxiety attacks in the past. I was prescribed Xanax which helps, because it's on a take as needed basis. My question is, I occasionally drink coffee. Of course, coffee may exacerbate the anxiety, though it usually doesn't cause me any problems. If my anxiety does happen to surface, would it be dangerous to take a Xanax after I had a coffee? Would mixing the two be dangerous? I know it's not a good idea, but I just wanted to know, just in case.

As a healthcare provider I can tell you the two do not cause a problem. You are on target with the coffee being counter productive. I would also recommend the start of an antidepressant. It could prevent the attacks from happening at all. Effexor is approved for panic disorder.

I doubt mixing coffee and Xanax would cause you any more problems than the caffeine in the coffee possibly counteracting the calming effects of the Xanax.

What you don't want to do is mix Xanax (or any other drug from the benzodiazepine family) with alcohol. That's a good way to wake up dead.

I want to caution you not to take the Xanax more often than once or twice a week. More often than that can lead to physical dependence and a dreadful withdrawal if you should discontinue.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a non-drug method for treating anxiety. http://www.anxietynetwork.com/hcbt.html

No, it's not dangerous

but why bother doing something to ease one condition, that the inclusion of the other is actually contradicting and causing to begin with?

Get rid of the caffeine all together and get some sleep! The anxiety will be relieved all on it's own, with a few good nights consistent rest. A panic attack is your body trying to tell you that if you don't relax... I will shut down!

Try some melatonin and lay off the caffeine. How much soda do you drink in a day on top of the coffee?

No but it might merely reduce the effectiveness of the xanax as one is a sedative and the other a stimulant. Have they discussed what might be causing the attacks?

You should call the pharmacist, but i used to take ativan and drank cola, which has caffeine. You would probably do better to go decaf, in my opinion. I hope you have gotten some counseling to learn some non-medication things you can do to make the anxiety better?
