How do you handle it when people assume you are a believer?

When they ask what you gave up for lent, for example?

Funny you should mention, but my boss actually asked me what I gave up for lent.

What's to handle?

You either own up and say you don't celebrate or you lie and say you gave up Salmon.

Either way is fine with me. Being an athiest is not the same as say being a pedophile or something. Its a personal choice. Sane people respect other people's personal choices as long as those people do force theirs on one.

You can give something up for lent if you don't believe, we all know the reality that going without something for a period of time makes you appreciate it all the more when you get it back. That's why the practice has survived over all these years, do you know any Christians who still don't eat meat on fridays or stone people for being unbelievers? Uh, scratch that last one.

I just try to be nice, and pretend for the sake of comfort. Up to a point, once i don't know what i'm talking about i just tell them i'm not that into it. Which is true.

I tell them I gave up God for Lent one year, and it worked so well I just kept it up.

If I know it won`t cause an argument ,I just tell them .I am not religious .If I have to avoid a conflict ,I just tell them I gave up something I already don`t like . Ex. I gave up cheese omelets or black licorice .

My friends and family all know I'm an athiest (or at least an agnostic) so they never bother me about that.

*pats on back* Don't worry, they'll figure it out eventually!

Well, when it's something specifically-Christian like that, I tend to tell them that I'm Jewish.

Which REALLY confuses people when they try to figure out how I'm an atheist Jew.

I tell them I'm atheist and Buddhist, which usually either spurs a conversation or complete silence on their part.
