You can get arrested and charged and thrown in jail for threatening someone, being sued should be the least of your worries.
Actually "Old Smokey" it is an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada to threaten bodily harm or death. You DO NOT need to act on it. I am positive it is the same in the US.
I have arrested and charged many, many people with this.

Depends where in the world you actually are when you make the threat.
As Mike H says, it's a criminal offence, behaviour likely to cause harassment alarm or distress. Section 4 of the public order act 1986 but only applicable in a public place and in the UK (other laws apply overseas)
Could also be seen as a threat to kill

You should learn to control yourself. A neighbour has threatened to kill me and now I am really nervous every time I go out and come in. The path leading up to my front door feels like a really risky place to me. I refuse to move as I live in a rented council flat and have spent loads of money decorating the flat and landscaping the garden. However, I have had to have a spyhole fitted in my front door and every time I go out I have to check if it's safe to leave the house. You should be ashamed of yourself making this sort of threat to somebody - it can really make a difference to the quality of somebody's day to day life. What you really should do is find the person and apologise, then learn not to lose control in this way again.

Of course you can buddy. In Ireland you can be prosecuted under 1997 non-fatalities act against the person. There is a similar act in the UK, usually the outcome in court is not serious but repeated offense can carry more serious sentences.. The circumstances under which the incident happened is taken in to consideration also there is a possibility that it wasn't your fault in the first place and that you may have been provoked... Maybe you should just try to control your rage..

Yes, because first of all, anyone can sue anyone else for ANYTHING. The question is if it is a case that they might win or not. Second of all, threatening to kill someone verbally can be considered a crime, but how are they going to prove it?

Contrary to the misinformation provided by others, it is not a crime no make a threatening statement unless of course you act on it. As for being sued, you can be sued for anything, but it is unlikely that it will go anywhere.

Not sued, but you may get arrested for conspiracy to commit murder. If the person dies, you will be #1 on the suspect list. Be careful and don't be stupid.

Possibly - if there were witnesses to your threats or you may just get issued with an injunction that you may never approach the person again and if you do you could get a hefty fine or imprisonment.
