to get the full effect of HD yes you do, Sky HD is really expensive right now, wait 6 months and the price will half, and there will be more channels available ( 8 right now)

hd just gives you a good picture the digi box provides you with the channels

digi is only freeview channels at the moment, no HD signals can be picked up by them, you need ether SKY-HD or a HD provider.

At the moment only SKY have HD channels. So you'll need a dish until freeview catch up.
