need tips on my old bird?

my bird is over ten years old,,and i want to get him a girlfriend,,would he like it or is he so used of being alone that he would'nt like her in the cage,,,i need to know this from some one who has knowledge of the bird world,,he is a cockateil

Keep a seperate cage for his buddy. You can safely keep two males together and then you don't have to worry about them breeding.

Remember to keep the new bird in quarentine for at least 30 days before letting it near your other bird.

Introduce them slowly. Keep the cages next to each other so they can interact, but keep their own space. Next, supervised play time. If they get along well, then they can go into the same cage. Keep an eye on them though!

You may need to purchase a new, larger cage for the two of them. Remember, bigger is better. I have been keeping three birds in the Blue Ribbon Z2 aviary, I am including a link for the Z1. It is a great cage for multiple cockatiels.

The person that says that cockatiels only live up to 20 years is incorrect. They can live up to 35 years if well cared for. I personally have a 19 year old cockatiel.

That's not all that old for a cockatiel, really. They can live to be up to twenty years old, so yours is in bird equivalent of middle age. He'd probably be glad of a girlfriend, though I'm sure he wouldn't accept a new male in his cage at this late age.

Edit: The cockatiel can live to older than twenty, but it isn't common. Average lifespan is between fifteen and twenty.

He's not necessarily too old. If you want to make sure put another cockatiel in a cage and put it alongside his. The display should tell the story.
I did this with one of my birds who immediately skampered about and said every English phrase he ever knew how to say. It was obvious he was receptive and you could see within 15 minutes.
