The CA DMV has a page that breaks down the penalty fees for a late registration renewal (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/vr_info.htm#BM2512). It looks like you will have to pay regular registration fees ($31 + VLF) plus 60% of the VLF and weight fee. To find out your exact penalties, though, call the DMV to be sure. It's 800-777-0133.

You don't need to worry about the expired registration that was under the seller's name, you will get a new registration date when you complete your title/registration process. If you want personalized license plates, this would be a good time to get them also.

If it were me, I would tell the owner of the truck "I'll buy this as soon as you get the registration current." Why would you want to pay the late fees?

Contact DMV. They'll tell you everything. A bonus with that truck (73) it's smog test exempt. 74 isn't. Go Rams!!! ha ha ha
