i now live in the united states but was born and grew up in german speaking countries, people who don't know this (i don't have an accent) have told me that they think german is the ugliest language (actually people who do know where i come from have said similar things). i speak and sing in german whenever i get the chance, but i do think twice knowing that so many people here don't like it. can someone tell me why this is?

It is ignorance, combined with a cetain prejudice which has rubbed off from previous generations, to whom the Germans represented the enemy. But who can sing Bach's St Matthew Passion or Brahms's Requiem and honestly think German ugly?

I don't think that German is an ugly language (in fact, I like it very much!), although I do know where the misconceptions may have originated. A lot of times when Americans think of German, they think of Nazi/World War II movies, where much of the German is Nazis yelling and swearing. This puts an ugly image of German in their minds.

Because they are easy to brainwash people. Think all Germans are Hitlers. And don't realize that German is the best structured among the modern languages

Depends the person.

I like some German accents.

Not too crazy about the barvarian one.

I think it is sad but true that some people still associate Germany with the evils of world war two.

I have no idea why that is. I am currently in my 2nd year of german and am in absolute love with the language. I want to become fluent in it since it is the 2nd most language used on the internet behind English. That's really dumb.

Because for those who grew up hearing Romance Languages, German sounds harsh and unfamiliar.

Speakers of English tend to think this way about languages that have long consonant clusters and lots of hard consonants. Germanic and Slavic languages lose in this department, and Romance languages fare better.

German is not ugly, it is unique. I like German though, I don't know why they do not like it though, I know a lot of people that like German.
