Anything between $20 and $50 is fine.

A 'banquet' for a one year old?! Clearly, this kid's parents have more money than brains. The price of the gift you choose should not be proportionate to how much the parents are spending per guest for this banquet. You can find LOTS of fun and educational toys at Toys 'R' Us for around $20.00. I certainly wouldn't spend much more than that.

Actually, a gift is optional. if it is required, then it is no longer a gift. However, I would recommend getting something the little dude would enjoy, whatever the price. If you are very close to the family, you might want to spend up to fifty dollars, but a good quality book or two would be great for reading together, and that can cost less than ten bucks.

When in doubt buy a good book that can benefit the child later. The value will not be in the money spent but in the contents. I give books with famous tales, wisdom or poems. I write on it that I hope when you grow up you will enjoy it as I do. Parents will be happy for the wish to grow up.
