The idea of golden years is a myth. Sure, one room school houses were quaint, but there is something to having one teacher per age for an entire year. The fifties may have seemed more peaceful, but segregation surely was a detriment to many. Now we have great leaps in technology, but standardized testing is beating the crap out kids.
I guess I would say it was 1987-97. Decent technology, standardized tests were just beginning to be used but not made the be all and end all of assessment, teachers felt comfortable enough to try new programs without worrying about if it would affect test scores.

The golden years of education in the US were the 60s. It was the result of the Pennsylvania Project, which was designed to boost education and scientific development in USA. The need arose when the Soviets sent their first sattellite to space. This had shocked the American government, which was telling people that the 'free world' was more advanced than the communist world. The project was a success and USA sent the first men to the Moon in 1969 ("...we shall send men to the Moon before this decade is over" JFK). Academicians and scientists had assured Kennedy that this project would help advance education in America, and indeed it did. The educational system in the US, especially the high school system was highly successful in the 60s.
