They are a political instruments of manipulation and of safeguarding subservience from the subjects. However, they build on the core of ancient beliefs about God which evolved genuinely by people's cohabitation with God and the Nature, over thousands of years.

The answer is to strip the religions of what is political and let them return to the simple relationship of humans with God.

They realize that there must be a higher power than man - otherwise, if man were the answer, why do Irish Protestants/Catholics, Sunni/Shiites, Iraqis/Iranians, Whites/Blacks, Chinese/Japanese, Muslims/Jews, North Koreans/South Koreans etc., etc., etc., continue to act like animals and try to eradicate each other?

This earth is a stage where Good and Evil are battling each other to see who will win. My money is on God.

Preaching from a book they believe to be true (with its scriptures on love and understanding), but actually encouraging people to be hateful and intolerant in the same breath.
Having ornate and elaborate churches, while turning away people who aren't "the right kind for our church." Taking money from poor people, while telling the same people to just have faith that "God" will take care of them.

Attractive, feel-good beliefs. You will be saved, you will go to heaven, you will get 72 virgins, for example. "You will be rewarded in some way if you follow this religion." is one of the best ways to attract people to a religion.
