Please anybody, I left my laptop plugged into my wall circuit and had the power overload because I had too many appliances running at the same time. And I went to switch back on the electricity in my room and when I came back in the laptop had been playing music , but now was sputtering static very loudly and the screen was blank (nothing on there) and I tried to turn it off, and I could not turn it off. I finally took the battery out of it and put it back in and then it booted up fine and I am typing to you now on it.
How likely is it that I did serious damage?

What happened to it?

I don't think there is a serious damage to your laptop. Don't worry. Overloading your plug will not really damage your laptop but it can cause a fire if the plugs in your home are not protected by a suitable fuse at the fuse box. In the case of an overload, the plug would have overheated and a fire could have started, burning your laptop together with everything else. But overloading would not have caused any malfunctioning to your computer. The static you heard was coming from your loudspeaker perhaps due to overplaying. To check if there are any damages to your computer, open the My Documents folder and and open some of your files there to have a look. If they are there and in tact. the chances are that your computer is OK. It is clear that it can still connect to the Internet and open Yahoo! Since you wrote this question and sent it on the Internet, it is as good as before you overloaded the plug. Don't overload again. It is very dangerous.Take care.

It's very unlikely that it could have caused any serious damage, as before the circuitry could get damage, the fuse in the plug would have blown. I can't see why your laptop was behaving strangely, as if the mains power went, the battery should have provided backup thus allowing the laptop to carry on as normal. Maybe the surge in power, or the fact that the power was cut off caused it to crash.

A power overload, a spike ? if it was large enough to do any damage it would have blown a protection fuse, I gather from your information that your laptop was plugged into the wall socket so if you unplugged it, it would automatically go to battery power. From what you have said, if it's working OK I don't think you have a problem.

Do yourself a favor and buy a NICE surge protector that wont allow your CPU to fry. They can get a little pricey but its better than NOT being so lucky next time.
