It's not a "good" thing, but it certainly makes your family history more interesting.

My great-grandfather was convicted of attempted murder and jumped off a moving train while being transported to prison in the late 1800's. He changed his name and was never apprehended. That is not a "good" thing and it's not something to be proud of, but it makes a good story. Some of the relatives are mad that it's talked about, feeling that it disrespects him. But what does he care? He's been dead for almost 100 years and people are more likely to remember him.

That's awesome. It's historical.

My great-great grandfather was a bootlegger for George Moran's side, and was murdered by Al Capone's.

Is THAT a good thing to have in the family?

But it's pretty cool.

Better him than Neville Chamberlain, to whom I am related ('Peace in our Time', the appeasement of Hitler before Churchill took over). But I am also related to a bastard of Henry VIII of which I think that the operative word is 'cool'.

How do you feel about it? If you are proud, do more research about his life and times, and also your connection to him (if it is via his mother, be sure to read her tragic story).

The longer you do genealogical research, the more famous people you find as relatives. Personally, I find the lives of the "regular" folks on my family tree just as interesting, and sometimes moreso, than those who are famous.

I find it interesting. Is he in your line, or is he a cousin, or uncle? If he's in your line that's good. Lots of people can be in your family tree, but have no blood relation.

cool, I'm related to a crime lord(pretty sure, not 100%, maybe 75% sure) (great-uncle-in-law removed once or twice) he was a don, but he's dead. but i'm not all to ecstatic about it, i don't want to be like him, or get involved in the mafia.
