I know that most edible packing peanuts made of starch are beige; but I just got a box of white ones, which I know are made of starch and not polyester. My question is: are they still edible? as in, do they have harmful chemicals/bleach in them?
my guess is that they're ok since white wheat flour is bleached white.

I use these every year the first day of chemistry class. I tell the classes they need to know the physical and chemical properties of the different things around them in order to understand what is safe and what is not.

Then I hold up several types of packing peanuts and ask them properties of peanuts. When they have listed several properties which make the peanuts good for packing I will say great job, but you forgot something. Then I eat the edible ones. I never have gotten sick or upset stomach from this - and I do this 4 times a day.

This is the best way to grab their attention and get them interested in chemistry. They have A LOT of questions for me after I eat the packing peanuts!

I like the idea of doing a soup or toy drive, or something. It can be a tradition that will make you both feel good - and you can pass it down to kids (if that's in the plan) You could look up "Christmas events" in your city. There's gotta be SOMETHING fun going on. For example, in my city, there are light festivals in the park, and Christmas villages in the city where you can walk around and just drink hot chocolate. Do you have any favorite Christmas movies? You could do a "movie festival" one night with Christmas munchies. How about a night with friends where you each wrap up and exchange something you already own? One person's junk is another person's treasure :) You could do it over wine and play Christmas music and ask everyone to dress up. Window shop - but make sure you don't buy anything! You could spend a day visiting "unpleasant" people - just to make them happy. Are you anywhere near a countryside? Does it snow where you are? Maybe you could make a tradition of just getting in the car and driving through "Christmassy" areas while you listen to Christmas music. My friend has a tradition where every year, he finds new (mostly obscure) Christmas music, and makes CD's that he passes out as gifts. I'd LOVE to have a tradition where I could go to a cabin for a weekend and ski (or not) :) - but that is quite expensive. I love those "Christmas Calendars" with little chocolates behind the doors - you could each get one for yourselves, and open one door each day leading up to Christmas. I'm out of ideas at this point .. I'll try to think of some more

Ive eaten those, they didnt upset my stomach or hurt me at all.

The whole point of them is that they are biodegradable, so if thye start adding harmful chemicals, then it defeats the purpose.
