Definitely not floor-length. Use fabrics that aren't silk or satin that don't scream formal. No beading. Simple, daytime appropriate!

I always err on the side of caution, and wear something formal, like a long black dress, or a black cocktail dress that hits a bit under the knee. Or any other color dress besides white that fits that description. You just don't want to upstage the bride or family. Turns out I've never felt out of place being elegant. As long as whatever it is you're wearing isn't gaudy, nobody will remember what you wore anyway.

Go to a store like Banana Republic or JCrew. Great way to get an informal bridesmaids dress for a great price. Plus, all the bridemaids can order online.

Flyaway pants and a nice blouse would be cute. Or a skirt and blouse and the great thing is they have not wasted any money and can wear them again.
