A few of the better credit cards companies in terms of having good rewards cards, decent customer service, etc. are American Express, Citi, and Chase.
Since you're new to the game, I thought I should also mention that the best way to use a credit card is to use it like cash. Pay off your balance every month to avoid interest and fees, then you can just enjoy the rewards. To find the card that will pay you the most rewards for your normal spending profile, check out the rewards calculator at http://www.creditcardtuneup.com/ .

NOOOOOOoooooooo! You do NOT have to get one sooner OR later! I don't have any. I haven't had any since 2002. You can do all the same things you might do with a credit card by using a debit card. The difference is that with a debit card, you can never go into debt. We use our debit card or actual CASH for everything: airline tickets, rental cars, world travel, whatever. Online, we use prepaid Visa cards to reduce the risk of someone unscrupulous cleaning out one of our checking accounts & maintain privacy.
Credit card companies are some of the most unscrupulous businesses out there. They have even been known to intentionally miscredit payments just so they can charge late fees & have an excuse to raise someone's interest rate. Not that they need an excuse, they can raise your rate for any reason. If they think you have too much other debt, if you miss a pymt on another debt, if they think you have gas, if they think you ahve too many open lines of credit or that you have paid off another debt too rapidly for their preference....you get the idea! Finally, you can get airline miles through the individual airline (Dh uses Continental.) & even earn "points" on some debit cards now, but who cares, honestly. No one ever got rich on their stupid "cash back bonus" or "points"!
So, what are the best credit cards? The ones I cut into little pieces & made into a framed mosaic to remind me that I NEVER, NEVER, NEVER want to borrow money again!
We follow Dave Ramsey's "Total Money Makeover" plan to live w/o borrowing. NO, I'm not trying to sell anything! Just listen to the free podcasts then decide if you want to buy the book. It's only $15 online right now, anyway. I'm just telling you this, so you will know that it CAN be done, we DO IT, THOUSANDS of people have also done it & YOU CAN, TOO!
Best wishes!

Visa or MasterCard seem to be accepted just about anywhere; Discover is not accepted by some merchants. We carry all three just in case.
Beyond that, if you routinely carry a balance, go for the lowest interest rate. If you always pay your balance in full each month, the interest rate doesn't matter so much (but you need to pay up in full and on time every single month or you'll get hit with exorbitant interest charges). Some people like cards that give them "points" or "miles" or some other kind of reward for using the card. If you are one of them, go for a card that rewards something that you value, such as frequent flyer miles or rebate points. Some of them give you cash-back; others allow you to cash in points for gift certificates. Another factor that may influence your choice is the length of time between billing and payment due date. Some cards don't give you much time. Also, pay attention to the interest rate charged on cash advances if you use this feature. Some cards allow you to get separate account numbers for each online purchase (a security feature so you aren't using your CC# on the internet). Some cards may charge an annual fee of some sort. Unless the card has lots of extra features that you value, it is usually not wise (or necessary) to have to pay a fee to carry a credit card.

This one is good for "newbies" to credit cards.
