Why is it that when I enter my bird's cage to feed him, clean it, or change his toys, he violently attacks me? What can I do to stop this behavior, other than fight back?

He was given to me by a relative about 6-9 months ago. He was never this aggressive, it has gotten worse over the last 2 months or so. Great answers (with a few exceptions) so far. Thank you all!!

he is asserting his dominance over you.
step one to regain controll is to clip his wings if they are not already. this is taking his ability to go wherever he wants away, he has to rely on you.
step two is to make sure you are not exibiting any signs of giving in to him. dont jerk your hand out of his cage if he bites you, he wins. dont put him up if he bites you, again, he wins.
get a training perch, (a small perch he cannot get off of with no toys, food or water) and start with the most basic of commands, 'step up'
if you put him on the perch and he refuses to step up, push back on his chest until he has to either step up or fall off.
once he understands that you are in controll, he will be nicer. he's not bing mean, he's being 'top bird'
you have to show him he's not and he'll stop. i had the same problem with my bird.
good luck to you!

Imagine that a 36-foot tall parakeet forcefully came into your house and started rearranging things. Even things you'd carefully arranged in a certain way. Wouldn't you feel a little put off by that ? So does the bird. If you want to stop him from fighting you you'll have to gain his trust. Birds don't just give that away. You have to earn it.

I don't know how often you let him out or play with him but it may be because he wants more time outside of his cage you know some freedom and that he don't know you that well. My mommy and daddy let me and Verde out as much as we want when we are awake as long as they are home. Also 20 minutes before bed we have family time in the bedroom the one room we can't go by ourselves. So we have time to explore and hve fun with them. We don't like to be cooped up. Please remember don't hit him it will only further the anger. So try spending more time with him and give him more time out of his house. You would be suprised how much friendlier we are and happier.

You don't say whether this is a new behavior or whether he's always done this. I had a very loveable Budgie but, my brother had one loveable and one 'attacking' one. I can only say that the 'attacking' one came to him because I found it hopping around in my driveway. It apparently got loose from his home and his wings were clipped so he could not fly. Perhaps it could be caused by mistreatment or trauma sometime in his life. You could ask your vet or someone at a pet store about this.

I think your budgie has been watching too many Hitchcock movies. I used to have a budgie like that. He grew out of the attacking after about a year, but never warmed up to being handled.

just keep your hand where it is when he attacks you. he is showing his dominance over his space.
