I wonder if there is a witness protection program for those, like me, who used to say that but are now an atheist.

Witness, by Christian's definition, is how someone presents themselves to others. When they are a witness to Jesus they are presenting themselves as close to the the way Jesus would act that they can. Basically a Christian who would drink or smoke or something along those lines are hurting their witness by not acting in how they believe.

Witnessing is simply not trying to "sell" Jesus to anybody but simply being a witness to the power of how Jesus changes peoples lives for the better. It's like if you witnessed a miracle, you would tell people about it.

Its the Holy Spirit thing again ... the Holy Spirit within christians is the witness to what Christ really is and what He has done and reveals that to them ...

It means to reflect Christ in what we do, bear witness to Him.By being Christlike, we show Christ to others.
