Depends upon the sort of riding you want to do. Scott and Giant both have lightweight machines, which are ideal for race XC. Specialized have better set up on the XC frames. Very aggressive, so although slightly heavier, are just as fast.
Trek are very sit up and beg and are therefore better for learners.
Wytte are the most inovative sett up and Marin, by the Wytte assosciation are very good frames.
What do you want from a mountain bike? Only you can answer this question.

If you mean all around brand as to have bikes for all segments, you would need to remove all the boutique and nice brands, like Titus, Turner, Ellsworth, Santa Cruz, Moots, Knolly, etc..
That would leave Specialized, Trek, Giant, maybe Cannondale, Kona, and such.
I believe that Specialized offers a very great range of bikes (from 300 mountain able hardtails to above 7,000 carbon bikes like Stumpjumper, Epic and Enduro). Also, they offer a lot of stuff separately, like excellent tires, saddles, helmets, shoes, gloves, lenses. I don't think no one else offers all this. They have a good customer service for their size.
Also, I think they do invest a lot of money in research, and buy technology they think worth it. Case in point, the horst link. Some might criticize them for protecting they're patent legally, but they're entitled to it, and it's business, not personal.
Giant and Trek would be my other two contenders to reach something that is always vague, but there it is.

I don't believe anyone can answer this question for you, I think you need to answer the question for yourself. Everyone will have opinions based on there beliefs. IMO Trek has the best and are the most popular mountain bikes on the market today, but again that's my opinion.
Determine what type of riding you are going to do and how much money you want to spend and visit your LBS and try out as many different makes as you can.
Remember you are riding this bike and what ever you decide to buy will be the best all around bike choice.

I agree with Ric, no one can really answer this question completely due to everyone's differant opinions. I'll have to go with Haro, and Mongoose. Above ALL, go with what ever you feel is right. Test ride a few at your local bike shop (thats how I found my Haro). I'm sure you'll know when you have found your perfect match.

If you want bikes with really sharp, lethal and exceptional design----its hands down, INTENSE---its combination with SRAM, RACE FACE,MAVIC and other high-end gear can CONQUER any terrain. Turner, Santa Cruz, Giant and Kona have terrific rigs to choose from. Consider your expertise as a rider---cross country? freerider? downhill madman? just a cruiser? Then just TEST DRIVE in the nearest BIKE SHOP woith TONS of quality mt. bikes----then CHOOSE YOUR WEAPON!

The best one is one that fits you the best. No use buying one if your going to be uncomfortable on it.
