There are multiple ways to put rifling in a barrel. The first step is to use a gun drill the next step is reaming the hole. The next step is called cut rifling although that hasn't been used since WW2 you also have what is called button rifling where you pull the bit through the barrel. The final technique is called lapping it has a tendency of the barrel wearing out sooner first you get a cleaning rod about 3" from either end of the barrel and pour molten lead into the barrel an freeze it using a lapping compound you would move it back and fourth it will take any abnormality's out of the barrel and make the barrel slightly bigger.

There are several ways to rifle a barrel, but it's hard to beat mass production. As a home gun builder, it takes less time and money to buy a barrel. Last week I saw a Ruger 10-22 barrel for $20 on ebay.

As mentioned above a Reamer is a tool used to go through a drilled holes in order to give it a precise internal Diameter and in fact in a lathe the tool stays still and the workpiece rotates. the reamer would give the rifle bore a precise even and smooth surface the rifling would indeed be done with a broaching tool.

Wow, Rambo. I sure hope that Greg doesn't read your posts. You would no longer be working for T/C if in fact you really do, which I seriously doubt it. What you described as lapping a barrel is no where close to the correct procedure.

They use broaches which are hardened steel tools shaped with the pattern of grooves. A press is used to force the broach into a hole drilled lenghtwise in the barrel. The broach is twisted as it is pushed to cut the grooves with the swirling pattern.

It's done with a ream, it is inserted and twisted slowly to make a groove that gives the bullet it's spin for accuracy.
