You would still have your licence but you would not be able to use it in the UK. As you know, you have to be 17 to be able to get a car driving licence in the UK. I'm not sure of the rules and regs in the US, but until you have passed your theory and driving test here, you are not allowed on the road unless you are showing L Plates and have a qualified driver with you who has held a full licence for at least three years and is over 21.

Here is a link to our Highway Code which can help you with our driving regulations...

I've looked at the DVLA website, and it isn't really clear.

Obviously, people who have a driving licence in one country are generally held to have one when they visit another country - otherwise you'd never be able to hire a car on holiday, for instance. And generally people from the US can, I believe, drive for a period of time before having to get a UK driving licence. But it doesn't seem to specify about 16-year-olds and I agree with you that it could be an issue.

I'd suggest contacting them directly and asking; they're the ones who'll be able to give you a definitive answer, where all we can do is give opinions. The website is www.dvla.gov.uk

Hope this helps!

You'd have to wait to get your licesnce at 16.

You are only qualified to drive in the the US, so however old you were, you would need to take the UK test to be able to drive here. And because you're legally not allowed to take it until 17, you will have to wait.

But, if you believe you will have no trouble with it, you could book your tests (there's two, theory and practical) early so you can take it the moment you turn 17 (there's waiting lists in most places for practical tests). But it'd probably be wise to take a couple of lessons first, to get used to our roads.

Just because you passed aged 16 in the US doesn't mean the same law will apply if you move country.

You'd have to stick with the UK law which is 17.

You will have to wait until you are 17 and not just that a US state driving licence does not allow you to drive in any other country either. You will need to apply for an International Driving Licence probably available from the AAA in your country.

You must be seventeen to drive a car in the UK even if you hold a valid US license at sixteen.

You would have to wait to get your UK license since you will be bound by their laws.

you have to abide by the laws of the country you are in, not where you come from, that would cause chaos, but you can apply to sit your test on the day of your 17th birthday
