Hiking was the first means of travel for early humans. For much of human history, hiking was not a diversion but a necessary part of everyday life. Only after the Industrial Revolution, with its increased urbanization, did some people seek to walk in the woods just for the sake of walking. As far as modern hiking/backpacking, John Muir and other American naturalists did much to popularize such outdoor pursuits here in the US. Another important figure in American Hiking is Benton Mackaye, the father of both the Appalachian Trail and the Continental Divide Trail.
