We actually produce waxy material from much of our skin. This keeps it flexible, slightly moist and helps to protect it from infection. In the ear the material accumulates in some people, and enough can be produced to block the canal. It then needs to be removed by dissolving it or washing it out.

The majority of people produce only minimum amounts and it causes them no problems.
