It may be that you will have to live with this pain, surgery is not always the answer, and sometimes can cause more problems. Using deep moist heat helps ease some of the muscle/soft tissue pain, anti inflammation meds are usually needed, but do not take for long periods, I was using prescription ibufrofen, and my blood platelets got weird, so be careful with the non-steriodol meds, follow the directions. Getting some physical therapy may help, your doc can help with that, insurance will usually cover. I take Methadone for pain management, I excercise as much as I can. The symptoms can be controlled, to a certain degree. The mind has to control the rest, good luck.

Chiropractor - when possible massage therapist
Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.
Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.
The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).
For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

Hi,
I found many interesting info about sciatica here: http://curesciatica.toptips.org
While looking for a miracle cure, it has to be understood that sciatica pain in itself is not a disease. It is actually a symptom or a group of symptoms with an underlying cause that needs to be targeted if some sort of permanent pain relief is what one is looking for. But one thing is absolutely clear. Incorporating a few exercises that have a beneficial effect on sciatica pain in daily regime is of great help and whether a patient is taking drugs or not, these exercises ensure that his muscles are kept in a toned condition that lessen any flare up of pain. Just a few stretching exercises can bring about a drastic change in the levels of pain and signify the importance of exercise in the management of sciatica pain.

I recommend Pain Relief Complex and Joint & Muscle Pain Cream. Others have found great relief for their sciatica pain from these two all natural products and were able to start doing some of the activities that they had not been unable to do for some time due to the pain.
Hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me with questions.

I have chronic pain too, 5 years. Incense or candles, sound machine or music--anything that helps the senses distract me from pain. I finally got a dose of med that helps--for the first time in 4 years! Good luck! It's so very tough as you already know.

I'm suffering from the same thing.. Same side too. I was given some meds.. which I haven't taken. Using Ibuprofen at the moment.. Was using Tylenol Arthritis Pain, but it wasn't taking care of the inflammation. Back on Ibuprofen.. I have good days and bad.. My problem is my back is fused from 12-7 T and the area that is bothering me is below that.. in the lumbar region. If the inflammation doesn't go away. I might consider surgery too. Yoga is what I'm doing on Tues/Thurs. Good luck.

There are only two ways - 1) Acupuncture. But acupunrist must be a master, quack can't treat it. A needle here or there spoils the thing.
2)Surgery. No other treatment.
As there is no medicine to treat any pain you needn't think. If possible think visiting us, i have treated failed surgeries also.

You can go under the knife. but it doesnt mean the doc will be able to free up the nerve.
