Call weekly, talk about school, extra curricular activities, friends, etc.

Contact their school and request copies of announcements, report cards and etc. to be sent to you too (not just mom.) That way, you know what's going on and have topics of discussion.

Remind them that you are always there if they would like to talk and let them call you collect if it eases a burden to them.

Send cards for for birthdays and holidays - NOT just e-mails.

When it's time for a birthday or Christmas for a "wish list" - Send gifts for special occasions and NOT cash.

Let your children know how much it means to you that they stay in touch and THANK them!

When it's time for visits, remember that you do not have to be a "Disneyland Dad" to make them happy. What is most important to children is the quaility of the time spent with you. A local zoo, park, fishing, picnic, Sunday drive are all inexpensive treats that can be learning and bonding experiences.

I think that when the kids are there all of dads attention should be one them. Since its only summers charish the time show lots of love and interest every second that is possible while they are there. Ask them what they would like to do and try to make it happen- make it as special as possible...dont waste a second of it!

You should stay in contact with them all year call, write, or e-mail and keep yourself up to date with what is going on in their lives. You should not just be the fun parent because you don't have much time with them they should not think life with you would be so much better than their mother because them growing up well in more important. The most important thing they need to know is that you love them and if they need you, you will be there for them anytime or anywhere.
