My 3 y.o. daughter has got chicken pox and I'm smothering her with calamine lotion every couple of hours to try to stop the itching. Has anyone got any other suggestions that might work better?

My 3 year old twins have just got rid of chickpox. I was told to give piriton liquid to stop the itching. It really worked. Try to keep her cool through the night and give calpol if the spots hurt. Instead of Calamine lotion, NHS Direct advised me to use bircarbonate of soda, mixed to a paste with water and apply that. It dries the spots out really quick. If she is really bad, bath her in Aveenol (Only from Chemists). It is made of olive oil and oatmeal and also worked well. I would only bath her in this if really necessary as the warm water seems to aggravate the itching. Its awful to see the children poorly, but chickenpox soon passes and at least she's had them before school. I hope my advice works for you

Call your daughters peditrician, my 2 yr. old grandson just got the chicken pox and nothing was working either. We did the calamine lotion, oatmeal baths and baking soda baths. The Dr. ordered and oral med that helped quite alot. But nothing will take all the itching away. You just have to tough it out for the most part. Good luck.

Fill an old sock with porridge oats tie the end and let it soak in a hot bath, squeezing it out from time to time. when cool enough give her a long soak in the resulting cloudy bath - should keep her from feeling itchy for the whole night. Works a treat, and a lot cheaper than pharmaceutical options too!!

You could try chamomile tea bags. It's worked for me on insect bites and allergic rashes. Chamomile is soothing on the outside as well as the in. I save the tea bags when I make a cup, and use them while still wet.

I know what it's like, I've had it myself and seen my children through it. Hope your daughter is feeling better soon.

Somehow, I seem to recall, that a paste of Oatmeal and milk will relieve the itch. Maybe it's because it's so messy you forget it.
