We want to have kids soon...and I've heard that leather is a really easy clean up for messes that kids make. However, we also have a dog and a cat and they both jump on the furniture occasionally. I'm worried that their claws with leave a lot of scratches on a leather couch...what do you think would be the best bet for the type of sofa that would be easy to clean, yet durable against scratches, etc...?

ps...we plan to keep our pets off the furniture, but as we don't have nice furniture now and they are used to getting up there, it will take some training and it only takes once to put a nice big scratch on your couch...

I would look into microfibers or maybe even faux leathers (which I was once told was dyed through so that scratches would not show as much as on a surface-dyed leather). If you do decide to go with a leather, I've heard that they vary in durability so I would order swatches and try to scratch them with a nail and see what happens... but personally I don't think leather is the best bet for you.
You might also look into slipcovers... there are traditional slip-covered looks and also more contemporary looks available these days. For example, check out urbanhomestyle.com (or maybe it is urbanhomestyles.com) clubfurniture.com, and mitchellgold.com.

For your situation i'd buy microfiber. I've heard it is kind of like leather but easier to clean up and longer lasting. Enjoy furniture shopping!! Lots of great deals going on right now!
