The only thing atheists need to have in common is in the definition of what is an atheist...to have no beliefs in any god(s).
Other than that, we can or cannot have things in common...I like coffee, beer, wine, liquor and se* as well.

Absolutely the only thing that all atheists have in common is that they don't believe in god. Beyond that, there are atheists of all ideologies, all tastes, all backgrounds, etc.
Poohcat1, for example, is mistaken in saying that atheists "don't like the idea of rules to live by"--many, many atheists not only like, but desperately need rules, just as many theists do. And, indeed, most atheists and theists agree that there are already "rules", in a sense, governing their behavior--the laws of science. But those, obviously, are not ethical rules. In terms of ethical rules, many atheists are actually driven away from God not by their desire to have no ethical constraint, but rather by their moral indignation at what the Bible says God has done, and/or at what God's followers have done! In other words, many atheists actually feel morally obligated to reject God (either because he's described as doing evil acts like slaughtering the first-born children of Egypt, or because his followers are so often bad eggs), rather than wanting to "escape" morality.
It is true, on the other hand, that many atheists favor freethought (which implies "thinking for yourself" and "questioning dogma", not "amorality")--but that's still a generalization, and doesn't apply to all of them.

I'm agnostic. Let's go for beer, football, and poker. Oh yeah, and the ability to live a moral and ethical life without the use of a supernatural nanny. That whole 'free thinking' thing.

The basic answer is simply that they do not believe in God. But I noticed a particularly telling answer also. One of the people who answered made a comment about atheism being a "free thinking thing". That is true also. Atheists don't like the idea that "their thinking" should be ruled by anyone, least of all God. They want to do their own thing without constraints. I am not accusing atheists of being necessarily immoral or bad people but it does seem odd that they don't like the idea of rules to live by.

I can't stand coffee. But I love beer and sex! (sex burns off all the calories that beer adds to your gut, right?) ;-)
