Go for the 1.8 Zetec, preferably with the reflex and climate packs. That gives you disc brakes all round, traction control, multiple airbags, heated screens and air con. I had a 2001 (X) plate as above. Best car i ever had, mechanically solid and sticks to the road like s**t to a blanket. Now got the new shape 2006 1.6 VCT zetec and it's not as good :(

I have had both a 1.6 and 1.8 focus as a company car and found that the 1.8 is defiantly the one to go for. It has a more powerful engine and you will feel the difference on the open road.
The old style focus is much better than the new style focus and from a reliability stand point the early new style cars seamed to be dogged with electronic problems.
My 1.6 did 130,000 miles before it was traded in for the 1.8 and I had no mechanical or electrical problems.
The 1.8 did about the same mileage and other than having the wing mirror replaced due to a motor problem was again fault free.

I have a 2001 1.6 LX which has a Zetec engine of course. With the Reflex pack, which is ABS, traction control, and side airbags.
It's done 64000 up to now, and has had no electrical or mechanical problems. Just had a new starter motor fitted, that's all.
Handles very well, power is a bit down on the 1.8, but still pretty quick with one or two on board.
It's well screwed together, no rattles or squeaks, and seems to be durable.

We have a Ford Focus Zetec 1.8 with climate pack and a Ford Fiesta Zetec TDCi with climate pack and I have to say that we have had absolutely no problems with them. Our Focus is a 2004 model (pre facelift) and it's done 30K miles with absolutely no problems, our previous Focus did 37K miles with no major repairs either. Servicing is cheap, ride is comfortable, and handling is good. I would recommend getting one with a climate pack if you can, it's great to be able to pop a switch and watch the ice melt off the screen and then in the summer get in and in minutes it's cool.

the zetec is a 2.0 dohc used 1999 to 2003 after that it turned to the 1.8. no known motor recalls except the IAC which 99% of the fords have.

According to WHICH the Ford Focus 1.6 is a very good car and highly recommended. All the ones I have driven, and I don't like Fords were very good. The new one is a awful car. Very poor visability when reversing.
Go for a 1.6 Ghia with service history.

The mileage is a bit higher than average for a car of that age. Potentially an ex fleet car, but if it has an FSH no real worries, just push the price down. It's a buyers marker for used cars, take full advantage of it.

get the 1800 the 1600 is gutless, rear wheel bearings can be noisey but aside from that pretty bulletproof
