I get this often, usually when I lift something too heavy. However it generally goes away in a few days after using a heating pad. Yet, this time, after 6 days, the pain is still there. Many friends tell me to go to a chiropractor, but I think this is muscular and not skeletal.

The pain is just to the left of the top of my spine, and it is not constant, just annoying. I can turn my neck with just slight discomfort, but I does hurt when I try and sleep on my stomache.

Any ideas as to what this is?

go see your primary care physican and he will send you to a specialist that can help you. i have somewhat the same pain as you and i have been to a chiropractor and he didn't help so, i have an appt with an orthopedic. you can e-mail if you want to know some of the things i do to try and relieve the pain

It is likely a combination of muscle and skeletal and if the skeletal is correct the massage therapist can get further. To get under the shoulder-blade reach that hand over to the other shoulder.

Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

Try this simple remedy: Rescue Remedy Cream or Spray. Available at almost all leading healthfood stores. Try it and then go to the chiropractor (which may not be needed). Strngthen your neck and shoulder muscles by regular exercise afterwards.

Sounds more like a neck problem than a shoulder problem, like a pinched nerve.

A chiropractor would be a good start, if no relief there, maybe prolotherapy.

First off, you don't use heat therapy for injures, use a cold pack, or ice pack.

To tell if it's muscular or skeletal, you have someone else move the part for you. If it's a muscle thing, then it shouldn't hurt when they move it, but it's something wrong w/ the bones it will hurt regardless of who moves it.

Maybe it's your rhomboid, I dunno. To the left of the top of my spine is just a pack of muscle, and i've never heard of a bunch of muscle just constantly getting injured

it could be a pinched nerve or something similar. My advice would be to go and see a doctor who will then recommended you to the right specialist
