My sister got her first Shar Pei when her daughter was 2. Had no problems with the dog but it really depends on the dogs personality.

I have been breeding the chinese shar-pei for many many years and i have 3 kids (12,10,6)and they have grown up around pei's all there lives including friends children etc and none of my dogs or puppies have ever been aggressive or mean in any way towards people or children, in fact my dogs perfer children and love spending hours playing with them. please dont hold a grude against a breed of dog . there are so many people out there that dont understand dogs and belive everything they hear about them. eg. people say pei's are mean and were used in pit fighting but you dont ever hear the rest of the story ! they were tried in pit fighting but were docile so didnt last in the ring. they do NOT have lock jaw. there are so many lies out there about this breed of dog.! all dogs of every size ,every breed can be mean and/or aggressive it depends on how they are raised, socialized etc not the breed its self. I could name a ton of very mean dogs but why its not the breed but the life it had. (they can see fine and the arent spooked!!!!)

Our family dog growing up was a shar-pei and he was probably the best dog ever. He was always really good with all of us. We got another shar-pei after he died, and her temperament was a little crazier. (We also didn't have as much time home with her, as everyone was older and busier.) So, as with every breed, it totally depends on the individual dog. Look for breeders that raise their pups around kids and people, and who will give you the opportunity to meet with the puppy both by yourself and with your child, to see how each reacts to each other.

You will need to be extremely vigilant in the beginning, as with any dog. The only time our dog ever bit one of us was when we were roughhousing with him a bit, and as puppies do, nipped one of us. It was not meant in a harmful way, but it hurt nonetheless.

Also, another thing to note: shar-peis are extremely loyal and protective of their family, and will generally try to attack any strangers or people coming into the house from the outside. We always had to put our dogs into the basement until the people were in the house for awhile...then they would be okay, it was something about them coming in from the outside that bothered them. And don't ever let someone who the dog doesn't know try to touch them - especially on the head. (This probably sounds scary - but our dog never bit anyone, you just have to know how they tend to behave around new people.) It takes them awhile to warm up to new people. You won't have to worry about intruders though - they wouldn't stand a chance against a shar-pei (a.k.a. Chinese fighting dogs!!)

Get a few books and read up on the dogs, so you can know their traits and disposition. They also have certain health problems that you will need to know about.

But anyway, they can be a great family dog, they were for us. I hope you get a dog as great as ours was. Good luck!

No, getting a Shar Pei won't help you because they prefer dog food over 4 year olds.

It doesn't matter the breed of the animal it depends on the temperment. Like pitbulls are GREAT family pets! Due to popular belif.

No dog is a good dog to have around young children unless you are going to supervise them together EVERY MOMENT.

as long as you teach your children that the breed can be easily spooked and never let them come up to it in a room that is not well lit. they don't see very well in dark spaces and are easily suprised.
