My grandmother was Mattie Lee Isgitt and I know little about where her people came from.(The Isgitts) Were they Indian or what?

Hey Sheila,

The Family Search site has only one entry for an Isgitt outside the US, and that person died in France after having been born in Louisiana.

If you were to get your Birth Record, and tie to your parents Birth Marriage and Death records, look at them carefully. That should name your Grandparents, and if you look at their BMD records, that will tie to their parents. Trace the name backwards using BMD Vital Records.

All the searching I do not find any outside the US. Your question if they are Indian, seems the probability is very high. You might be able to find information by DNA, but that is a LONG process and requires other participants to match. You could check with Department of the Interior and Dawes Roll for any matches too. You might want to research the Native American tribes that are in the areas where Isgitt ancestors are found also. Then find the Tribal web sites, and use the Contact information.
