Two free spyware removers.
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

The AVG free edition does NOT include a virus blocker. It only finds viruses that you already have. You could run it this morning, and then pick up 20 viruses this afternoon that will crash your computer. If you want anti-virus, get the paid version. Just about all of them are fine: AVG, Norton, McAfee, EZ - just don't fool with the settings because if you mess it up, there's no tech support for any of them.

I was just reading this this morning. This web site http://www.av-comparatives.org should help you out a lot. What may be good for some people may not be right for others. This site can help you make an informed decision. I also suggest doing a web search on the products that sound best for your use. Hope it helps :)
