what causes nearsighteness and how/why does it get worse?

In myopia, or nearsightedness, the point of focus is in front of the retina because the cornea is too steeply curved or the axial length of the eye is too long. Distant objects are blurred, but near objects can be seen clearly. To correct this, a concave (minus) lens is used. Myopic refractive errors in children frequently increase until the child stops growing. (Merck)

It's caused by the eye muscles getting lazy..the muscles think it's easier to relax making the lens nonreactive thus the focus diffused..to make the muscles stronger..try to read a page of a book just out of focus..do this once a day getting further away each time.after a while you will see te eyes working better .the eye muscles need exercise just like all the other muscles ..however if you have eye damage this may not work ..check with your opthalmist..

-hereditary factors and lifestyle
-Stress and lack of vitamins also can cause myopia
-Myopia is more common among people who are highly educated and have spent more time reading books
-Sometimes medication and drugs can cause myopia
-age issue
