For a long time it was African Americans. It must have been centuries before society accepted African Americans with equal rights what with white people ruling over. Also going on around that time was non-equal rights with woman. It was a long time until woman in general could have equal rights and vote like white males. Boy, do I feel sorry mainly for those black females in the olden days. They must have really been put down. Anyway, luckily now, women tend to get the same rights as men do. As far as the black issue goes, I was feeling pretty good up until the whole Michael Richards incident. Veiled racism seems to be lingering now but at least it's a lot better than the olden days. Right now, we seem to really be working on homosexual people getting the same rights as heterosexuals. Luckily, there is being some justice out there, disallowing people to use the "F" word in the entertainment business. However, once we finally take care of these homophobes, what group is next?

I mean, I don't know what other groups out there in the U.S. are being severely discriminated against like homosexuals? Once we take care of homosexuality and give them the rights they deserve, I'm wondering what will America concentrate on next to give equal rights.

Fat people, discriminated against in work, travel and clothing. Consistently made the butt of jokes that are in poor taste and being made to feel less than capable of controlling themselves.
Prejudice is pre-judging and that's what we do when we look at a fat person, make assumptions about what the think, feel, and do. One night of listening to yet another Leno fat joke, or seeing Ellen tell one on, of all places, the Academy Awards show, and you realize how far we have come that a Black joke or a homophobic joke wouldn't be told, but a degrading fat joke is OK.
You don't have to like fat people, or black people or gay people, but you don't have the right to degrade them either.

Atheists are- statistically- the least trusted group in America. In a USA Today poll. 53% said they would not vote for one if they ran for office. Right behind the 43% who wouldn't vote for a homosexual (there's still a LOT of work to do).
Actually... I say we should be working on atheists FIRST with those kinds of statistics. Atheists are very underrepresented in the news, and if you want more info you can switch to any 24 hr news network and see that any invited "panel of religious experts" are allowed to talk freely against atheists since they are not allowed to join. It's always a Christian, a Jew and maybe another Christian (usually a black one) if they couldn't find a Muslim. See the scandal over Katie Couric's "no atheists in foxholes" incident for another good example.
Then there's Muslims... I see so much ignorance pertaining to them it's unbelievable. A coworker of mine thinks all Muslims are terrorists.
What to work on next in the long line of issues in this ignorant "land of the free?" How about the other 17% of America that ISN'T Christian?

And just what rights are you talking about as far as gays? Besides the marriage issue, they have every single right that you and I have. And even the marriage issue is rather moot isn't it?
And that can be fixed very simply by getting our government out of the marriage business all together. There should be no such thing as being "legally married." For everyone. And you speak just like a true left wing liberal, if something isn't wrong, go make a problem. So, typical.

That is very thoughful commentary. But please bear in mind that no one GIVES us our rights. No government or people has power to grant and deny human rights. Rights come from nature - by birth. Each of us are BORN sovereign. This is clearly stipulated in the Declaration of Independence. Each one of us has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness so long as it does not hurt or impede the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness of others.
While all persecution of homosexuals will never end, since there will always be people who fear anything that is not their clone, there will come a time when persecution of homosexuals will be unacceptable in society. Churches will stop anti-gay hate speech and will stop twisting and distorting Scriptures to support their personal bias - or they will be forced to stop their incitement to violence by law. There will come a day when two unrelated adult human beings will be able to marry without gender discrimination. There will come a day when terrified little macho rednecks will no longer be afraid of gays. Who would have thought a hundred years ago that rednecks would be hanging out with black folks, and yet I see it everywhere and every day now.
The United States is a Constitutional Republic - not a theocracy nor a democracy. The power to dictate human rights does not exist in a Constitutional Republic. Everyone has the right to believe and live out IN THEIR OWN LIVES what ever religious and moral doctrine they wish to chose, BUT, no one has power to dictate and inflict their personal religious and moral opinions on other sovereign citizens. We are all equal.
Homosexuals are not asking for rights. We need no one's permission for rights. We already obtain them. We are demmanding that the rights we already possess by virtue of our existence be acknowledged and protected. And those who do not wish to acknowledge the equal rights of their fellow sovereign citizen is more than welcome to move to a theocracy like Iraq where you can get away with killing someone you disagree with.

Homeless and abused animals?
Infants: should they have a voice in the abortion issue?
How about poverty...let's stop picking on poor people...
Old people..let's start seeing to it that elderly people are properly cared for and are treated fairly.
Disabled people. Being disabled is no joke...time to force our government to give disabled people the same rights as everyone else!
Fat people...yeah, I agree with the woman who thinks it is wrong to degrade fat people...especially since most Americans are overweight!
Blondes...personally, I'm tired of blonde jokes. It's just jealousy...
Hippies...
I'm sure there are lots more. So, when we've changed the world, and everyone accepts everyone else, then what?

Racism is treating someone differently or unfairly simply because they belong to a different race or culture.
People can also experience prejudice because of their religion or nationality.
Racism takes many different forms. These can include:
Personal attacks of any kind, including violence
Written or verbal threats or insults
Damage to property, including graffiti
Why are people racist?
Unfortunately racism can exist in all races and cultures. Racists feel threatened by anyone who is from a different race or culture.
We are not born racist. Our views and beliefs develop as we grow up. If a child or young person grows up within a racist family, or has friends who are racist, they may believe that racism is normal and acceptable.
Prejudice of any kind is often based on ignorance and fear of anything unfamiliar.

I may be able to say this purely because I live in a city. It's been said that there are no red states and blue states, only red states and blue cities. But:
I think, in the short term, over the next couple years, it would be nice if people weren't harassed for being social and political conservatives. I've met people who will not even SPEAK to me because I support the war in Iraq. So I think the political divide of liberal/conservative that has deepened so dramatically over the last 6 years or so will come to a head.

People still haven't really gotten over any of these listed issues for us to worry about new ones. There's still a long way to go.

Toleration is nice and hopefully we will all work to make it work better.
the next group should be our young people.
Why do they have to fight and die or be crippled for life because some old man in the white house decides to go to war in a foreign country. First it was Viet nam, Korea, now it is Iraq.
When will we liberate our young people.

Any religious group is going to be the target of others who don't believe the same way at one point or another. However, I cast my vote for atheists. I think they are one of the most misunderstood groups in the US today.
