Use athletes foot spray, wash your shoes or buy some new shoes, and change your socks two to three times a day.

I'm not sure that home remedies are as safe and effective as getting a script from a doctor for athlete's foot. I've had the fungal infection a few different times and while I did use medicated foot powder found over-the-counter (otc), my doctor also prescribed medication that was a high enough potency to get rid of it.

I've read (on the net) that tea tree oil can help with some types of fungus. **However, I don't know your friend should try it or how much is safe to use. It is really in her best interest to talk with her pharmacist for any otc remedies (especially for the itching) until getting to see her family dr.

For the future (and present), it's a good idea to keep the feet dry such as when coming out of showering and actually drying one's feet thoroughly. That can help prevent athlete's foot (in other words, the fungus from having a place to live in moisture).

The above answer is correct. I would add that it helps to not wear the same shoes every day, especially in athletic shoes.
