Solid hardwood floors is the best choice because you can refinish it in a different color after a couple of years, where as with engineered flooring has a thin layer of finish that's not durable to any finishing

Natural wood flooring is always the best.
1) A natural wood floor can be sanded much smoother than a pre-finished floor, especially between boards.
2) Natural wood floors are MUCH more durable over time
3) Natural wood floors with 2-3 coats of polyurethane can last up to 10 years between sandings - depending on traffic. Resanding and coating a floor is a weekend project anyone can do.
4) Natural wood floors are "richer" looking than pre-finished.
Natural wood is more expensive to install - slightly - but given that it is the most visible and used part of a room, that additional cost is very small.
Always remember, "go cheap, get cheap".

simple question. complex answer.
the others are right. solid wood is better. but, (there's always a but) it's more expensive, labor intensive to install and finish, and requires special tools to properly install. engineered flooring, on the other hand, is less expensive, can be easily installed by DIYers with basic skills, the quality control of the factory applied finish is nearly impossible to duplicate in the field, and with laminate flooring the color and species selections are almost unlimited. so, what's your skill level? what's your budget? and what's your schedule? good luck
one other thought. knee pads. never mind the stigma attached to them.knee pads are a must.
