A four year college degree in pre-med or biology or a major of study which would apply. You need to pass the MCAT exam to be accepted in a medical school and graduate (it take 4 years) and then you need to be accepted into a psychiatrict residency program (I am not sure if this is two or three years) Then you have to pass state boards in psychiatry. Long? Yes. Worth it? Yes again.

4 years undergraduate (sometimes can be done in 3 without a degree and just pre-med classes). 4 years of medical school. 1 year of internship which might be blended into your residency, and 3 years as a resident to be able to take the psychiatry specialist exams. For child psychiatry add a year..
