While technologies get better and better every day, most of them still rely on machines to replicate human thought and speech patterns. Often, words will not translate directly from one language to another, even by a native speaker. This is to say that not every word in English will have an exact counterpart in another language. In some Inuit languages, for instance, there are 17 or more words for what we in English refer to as "snow."
Online translators are a good tool if you know enough about the target language to account for its fallbacks. My Spanish students would try to learn "cool" phrases like "Word to your mother" by using Babelfish and GoogleTranslator. They were disappointed when I told them what they were saying made no sense in Spanish. "Palabra a tu madre" does not have the meaning in Spanish that my students wanted it to have.

The program is quite simple and does not know the finest elements of the language. Usually free online translator only know one translation for each word and cannot analyse the context.

Same thing happens with Altavista Babelfish translator. Try using very basic words and simple phrases, and then change
the final product to fit your needs.

all this online free translators are a double blade knive, you can get a very very wrong translation, is up to you to use them cleverly, I advice you to be a little retro and use a standard dictionary.

Tell me how a program should know whether you want to "see a man about a horse" or really see some guy about a horse you're planning to, say, bet on?

Because it lacks your imagination and subtlety. What do you expect from a machine?
