I have substituted applesauce for the oil in a cake recipe. I found by trial and error, that up to 1/2 cup will not change the taste of the cake. For cakes requiring more than 1/2 cup I will use liquid egg substitute to make up the difference. You can also add an extra 1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract to the batter to enhance the flavor when using applesauce.

YES...you can! But, it will change the flavor of whatever you are making. We made brownies last week with applesauce instead of oil, and they were fluffy but they do taste just a little different. My kids actually really like them.

Another option is to try reducing the amount of oil you use by half...with most box mixes that will work fine.

Another lowfat baking tip...use chicken boullion broth and/or lowfat italian dressing when cooking entrees such as stir fry or any other dinner dishes!!

I omit the oil altogether and don't add anything extra. Comes out fine all the time. But yes. You can use applesauce if you want to. I never liked the way the cake tasted with the applesauce though. But a lot of people do. It must be my taste.
Now that I think about it I should mention that I used box cake mixes. I doubt that mattered though. But they never used to ask for oil. All of a sudden they wanted it. I still left the oil out. It doesn't seem to be as heavy when I leave it out. Good luck. I'll be over with a gallon of milk and a fork.

No but you can and/or use a low fat oil!

I do a lot of baking using apple sauce and love it! Especially in my Brochen! (Little German rolls) - but apple sauce will not replace the oil that is necessary in bringing the ingredients together in the desired way!

I use apple sauce a lot. Adds a lot of moisture.

Yes, I have read that too. I believe you substitute vegetable oil with apple sauce.

This person says they do it too.

Yes you can. I have and it changes the flavor slightly but many people don't seem to notice or mind.
