Wow, that's an odd time for a practice. Someone didn't schedule that right.

I coach elementary school sports, and we NEVER put any of the kids below fifth grade in a late practice spot. Their brains just can't handle concentrating that late in the day either.

9pm is not a ridiculous time for bed for an 8 yo. But by the time he gets home, bathed, and in bed, it could be 10!!! I think that is too late on a school night, don't you?

Maybe beg the coach to move the time for all the kids involved? Get a bunch of other parents together to discuss it and see if his team can't switch with a 10-12 yr. old team, or a 13-15 team?

That is too late for school nights! Talk to the coach about it-- it's quite possible some of the other parents are thinking the same thing as you are. I've never heard of school night sports going past 7:30 or 8 for that age group. If he's practicing until 9, has to go home & bathe/shower and get ready for bed, he's probably not even IN bed until 9:30-9:45 at the earliest, right?

See if the coach can't move around the times for at least a couple of nights a week. That way you could at least choose to skip, or leave early, on the late practices. If that's the only time your coach is available for practices and it can't be moved around at least one or two nights a week, you can call the league manager and see if you can get your son placed on another team for incompatibility issues. They should be able to accommodate you, especially considering the craziness of having practices so late in the first place! I wouldn't want to keep my kids up that late on a school night *without* ADHD! They'd be monsters the next day, for sure!

Good luck!

I have two children also (7&8). Their bedtime is also at 8pm. On practice nights, I allow my children to stay up until 9pm. I think that sports is good for kids so I don't think a couple of nights a week of staying up until 9 or 10pm is going to hurt him. I wonder why the practice runs so late?! If it don't seem to working out, could you talk to the coach about him leaving 30 min. earlier?! I would try letting him stay until the end because it will burn up his built up energy and allow him to rest better once he does get to bed. I never rush my kids to bed as soon as they get home from practice because I know that I have to wind down myself and I figure they do to. We usually get home around 8:30 and get to bed about 9:30 on those nights.. As long as it's not affecting his grades or his behavior in school then he'll be ok! I know it's hard for us to realize sometimes but they are growing up. I've even thought about upping their bedtime all of the time to 9pm since they do so well at it.

I hear ya! My 8 year old started his B-Ball practice On Monday and it's been a chanllege to change his schedule around- since he's getting home right before his usual bedtime- We have tried to do the clothes ready for school for thenext day- before practice, as to help make our transition to bed and getting up next day easier. My son too is ADHD, so schedules are very important and anything can ruin a morning super quick- My advise

Plan in advance and try to make that bed transition smooth and in a shorter time frame so he is still somewhat "On track"...

Good Luck! Have a great baseball season! GO TEAM!!

I can't believe that they'd schedule baseball practice that late! Are there any other baseball programs you can go to instead? It's important for any child to get a lot of sleep at night so I wouldn't allow my son to go until 9:00PM. Just think he'll get home after a drive of at least ten minutes, and still have to calm down from baseball practice, take a bath, settle down for bed and go to sleep so he'd be actually going to bed at 10PM. I'd just try to find another program. I don't know what those people were thinking! Good Luck!

You don't say if it is every night or just a few nights a week. I think what time he has to be up and to school also makes a difference. My 9 year old is ADD and seems to do well with a late bed time due to sports one or two nights a week, but he doesn't have to be to school until 8:30 am. I would try it and see how he does for a week or two. I would also make sure he knew what was expected when we got home, such as shower, snack and bed immediately.

I've coached kids at this age in Basketball, Soccer and Gymnastics. Though usually most places will try to get practice for kids under 10 done by 8:00 pm, to be honest, the majority of parents didn't mind if the practice went up to 9:00 pm. Few parents ever told me their child was missing bedtime, but MANY told me they wished practice was every night because they just went home, brushed teeth, got in pj's and went to sleep.

If the schedule is set, it might be difficult to change the entire practice time. There could be other practices the same day, depends on the availability of the coach, perhaps that day is the best for most parents but timing is bad for the center. Ask anyway, but once the schedule is set, it might already be approved by the board of directors and could be difficult to change. However, changing him to a different practice or different sport is likely a viable option.

Well over 1/2 of ADD and ADHD cases reported are not that at all, it is more often lack of physical activity and over programming effecting a child's behaviour. Imagine you owned a Labrador retriever and only walked him 15 minutes each day, that dog won't listen, sit still or behave in any respectable manner ever...

Go with the exercise. You child needs 8-10 hours of sleep a night, if its a little less one or two nights a week, he won't drop dead or stop growing I promise.

What sort of school or rec dept schedules activities so late for young kids? That just seems absolutely ridiculous. I would let him play -- both the activity and the chance to be with his friends will probably be good for him -- and if you don't let him play, he might feel left out or different from other kids in his class. But I would definitely talk to the other parents and see what they think. It might be worth talking to the organizer of his baseball league and see if there is another time, place or day that would be better.

Actually, you are right. The extra activity will help him. Try making his bedtime around ten o'clock. See how that goes. I am sure after a hard practice, he will be tired and ready for bed. This will give your child a chance to prove to you that he can handle playing baseball, and not to mention how rewarding this will be your son when accomplishes this task.

I played sports in middle and high school and honestly 9pm is too late for a practice to end, ESPECIALLY for 8yr olds. He still has to get home and get washed up for bed. True it may help his ADHD, but you may need to find another activity or team with a better practice schedule for 8yrs olds. He is still a kid and has to go to class and stay awake and focus in class. Try it for a while but if you see that it's doing more harm than good, pull out before his grades and health suffer.
