In an attempt to help others decide on which breed of dog to bring into their home, I thought it would be neat to see what many of you personally think of your dog- positives and negatives.

Me? 4yr old German Shephard (mix?) from a rescue org. Kept indoors on 10 acre farm in the country.

Pos- Very loyal, by my side, easy to train, best behaved when well exercised (what dog isn't?) and protective (although, never bit a person). Very lovable with owner and family.

Neg- Sheds like crazy! His hair is EVERYWHERE, no matter how much I vaccumm. Also, very dependent on the owner- constantly wants to be in "your face." Maybe b/c he's a rescue, but he can get overly excited when strangers come to the house. VERY VOCAL- like, screaming in our ears when we drive with him in the car??? (probably a behavior that should had been corrected a long time ago...)

My Golden Retreiver!

Pos- easy to train, SO LOVEABLE!, loyal, friendly

Neg- Sheds a lot, likes to roam when off leash, can be stubborn, can have numerous health/allergy issues, can be very high maintance, life span has dropped- all of this is due to recent bad breeding. Too many being sold at puppy stores. Too cute at the store, so people buy the puppies, and in the end support the cruel puppy mills.

Great Dane -

POS - Very smart and loving. I have never met anothe dog to equal how much love these dogs give. Very loyal and is GREAT with children and adults. Make sure for every breed however, to associate them with children and others at a very young age. Doesnt shed that much and not many people want to mess with a house with that large of a dog.

NEG - size is a positive and a neg. Alot of people are scared of this large of a dog. Way I handle this is by training cute tricks like bowing and waving...etc. to help people feel more at ease with mine. Another neg is how much they eat!!! Lol. Dont get a dane unless you can afford good, quality food for them and you can front how much it eats...lol..one other neg is the life expectancy..7-8 years...they dont call them heart breakers for nothing. Lol...I love my danes and I will always own one.

I have had dogs in my whole life. My family loves different breeds, so I have been around all sizes and kinds. I now have a female Jack Russell. That breed is known for their level of activity. But mine has got to be the laziest one in the world. I have a black lab, who is 12 years old. She is extremely smart, loyal and was wonderful for my kids when they were growning up. Expect for the shedding, which is horrible, and the puppy years of digging, she has been a blessing to our family. I now have a monster puppy. He is 10 months old and 96 pounds. He is a Great Pyrenees. The yard has basically been redone by his own paws. Trees that were once healthy are now chew sticks. I had to replace the grill cover, and will be getting a new hose. But he is very gentile and loves being a "lap" baby. And that breed is known to be very good with children.

I have mutts or do they have me?

I dont like pets loose in cars so when needed I only use a kennel when transporting to vet.

I like inside dogs so I have pet doors so they can come in and out when they want.

I didn't like pet hair all over the carpet so I removed the carpet.

All my rugs make good dog beds and are machine washable and dryable.

I don't like smelly dogs so they go to the vet often for nail cliping and washing.

I don't like thinking about feeding them daily so they have large feeding containers. If they want to munch just push the door.

I don't complain if they bark at someone or a passing animal because I like the bark warning.

I don't like dogs that chew on my stuff so they have more chewy toys than most babies.

I don't like dogs that jump on or smell on people that come over so if one of my mutts decides to do this I put the offender into the shaded dog pen outside.

I don't like dogs in the bed but if it is a bit chilly I will galdly move over and make room.

I am well trained.

If you want a loyal dog for protection , my love has always been the male chow chow. I have owned 6 of them, Didn't have one that bit, but would make a sales man wet him self. The chow is not a dog for everyone. The chow requires alot of time and attention to get good behavior. And they are beautiful, but the coat takes hours of upkeep a week.

It is hard to get a good chow chow from champion breeding stock now, they are not as widely breed like in the years past. Not as many are to be found. A mix breed in a chow is not the same. Would not recomend a chow to someone that didnt have a country setting with lots of room to play, or without lots of time to devote to them. Eye and ear problems are expensive so that has to also be considered.

The boxer is my family dog. They are friendly, lovable, adorable, and so active. I have 2 and would not trade them for the world. They are loyal. The boxer is an breed that insurance companies will not black ball you for like they will with the chow chow.

Like the chow, not the dog for everyone. The boxer is HYPER, and loves to play. Also needs extra attention. They say a boxer will stay in its childhood for 3 years.............. You think your children had terrible 2's.......... TRY a boxer, lol They can destroy a clean yard in 15 mins lol. If they find anything that can be scattered. lol I have a pet door and they come in and out as they please, they behave very well except for one thing..... (I have 2)

They go into my daughters room, and get her barbies, dolls, hats......... and out the pet door they go..... to take them outside to play with and to chew on. lol She now keeps her door closed .

My husband has a huge Shiz shoo ? on spelling. Wasn't on my college entrance exams. He's huge due to layers of hair. I have 2 of his cousins smaller than he but still bigger due to hair unless cut. My dogs are Samson and Delilah. They are blonde and strawberry blonde respectively. Samson is very social-he hangs around me all the time. They are indoor/outdoor dogs, they have a doggie door. I have taught them things I needed them to know, down, I jerk my head sideways which means up, Sampson begs all on his own so cute he has 4 fuzzy white paws and a white streak on his head that sticks up and my husband says he has that :something about mary problem. They go night night when I say. They sleep in the kitchen. All of that roll over and speak stuff is only to impress others. I don't need it. We had a 100 lb wolf, shedding ha, she would shed her entire winter coat, what a mess. She passed on her 10 th year. We miss her. Yes, she howled around 10 pm.

personally for me chihuahuas...

positive....they are small enough to travel with, they make great lap dogs, they are very intellagent and extemly loyal...mine never bite or yap...the training is also what helps the behavior of the dog.

negatives...its hard to leave them for long periods at a time(which I very seldom do) they as well get very excited when people come over "like most dogs would" and they are scared and shaky when they are out of thier envirnment.

wether your dog is big or small you have to have the right space for them as well...I think bigger dogs need alot of yard to roam and smaller dogs are great condo dogs like mine..

We were talking about this just last night...and chocolate labs won for intelligence and friendliness. But there are a lot of great breeds--english springer spaniels, black labs, golden retrievers. I admire border collies but they are actually too intelligent, they seem to require too much attention because their minds are so active.

If you want friendly, labrador reteivers are super friendly, but not guard dogs, and they are natural duck hunting dogs, and are easy to train via rewards, and they can swim like crazy, because they have webbed toes.

For amost illegal viscousness pit bulls are the way to get everyone, but you biten and attacked. They are the most dangerous and territorial bread and will attack all, but the people it grew up with. Most of the time.
