My pup has very small pills to take for indigestion (about 1/4 a tablet). Any ideas on how to give it to him? He keeps spitting it out. Finally I diluted it in water and had him drink the water. But I want to be able to give it to him whole like the Vet said I should. Thanks for your help. This is a great way for a new dog owner to find out some info!
(Oh, he's not eating due to his upset tummy, do I can't hide it in his food - plus he needs the meds an hour before he attempts to eat)

Place your finge in the side of his mouth until he opens it. Hold it open and place the pill in the back of his throat and close his mouth and rub his throat until he swollows.

Hiding meds in food, dilutes it and the medication isn't as strong.

You have to restrain the animal (may take 2 people) and open the mouth and plug it down the throat. I know it seems harsh, but why else are you giving the pills to the dog...to save his life! You can't let the dog win by letting him resist, you have to show him who's boss!

My female pug hates taking pills and will hide them in her lip folds and spit them out as soon as I turn my back. The only success I have with her is putting the pill at the back of her throat, closing her jaws and immediately blowing in her face which causes her to swallow. It sounds mean but it's the only way to get her to take medication. I follow up with a "Good Girl!!!"

the technic looks alarming , but heres how

headlock, open his mouth, put the pill down his throat and rub his throat until he swallows. Then remember to call him a good boy once he does. give him a cuddle and a clap..

that is how many gran used to do her dog, if she hid the pills he would each the food and spit out the pill

Try cutting a small bit of cheddar cheese and pushing the tablet inside. As you pup isn't eating this might not work. Another way is to open his mouth and place it on the back of his tongue (Not too far though as he may choke), hopefully he will swallow it.
Hope this helps : )

Do what I did, give him a 'peanut butter pill.' Take a little bit of peanut butter, put the pill in it and then stick it on the roof of his mouth. He'll like the peanut butter so the pill will go down too. This was a tried and true method on my beloved Greyhound.

Just open his mouth and poke it down his throat. Sounds harsh, but it's the only effective way if you can't give it in food. It shouldn't be diluted.

If you have to give medication next time, ice cream or peanut butter work beautifully! He won't even know he took it.

you can also use canned cheese, the kind you spread on crackers. this works almost as well as peanut butter. it is very sticky and usually they can't get the pill out of it.

Open his mouth and keep it open using your thumb and forefinger. Place the tab at the back of his tongue. Quickly close and hold his mouth and stroke his neck to make him swallow. Good luck!
